GSSP for Visean Stage
Definition:
The base of theVisean Stage is defined at the base of Bed 83 in the Pengchong Section along the bed of small stream south of the village of Pengchong, Guangxi Autonomous Region, China. The GSSP coincides with the first appearance of benthic foraminifer Eoparastaffella simplex in the lineage of "Eoparastaffella ovalis group" to Eoparastaffella simplex.
Sedimentology:The Pengchong section is composed of 3 members:Upper member: Dark shales with subordinate thin-bedded cherts and dark shales. Middle member or Pengchong Member: mainly dark grey, thick-bedded limestones with subordinate thin calcareous shale interbeds. The GSSP is defined at the base of Bed 83. Lower member: alternating thin-bedded cherts and thin dark shales with a few isolated thin- to thick-bedded limestones. |
Primary Markers:
First appearance of benthic foraminifer Eoparastaffella simplex in the lineage of "Eoparastaffella ovalis group" to Eoparastaffella simplex.Secondary Markers:
Conodonts:The first occurrence of Gnathodus homopuctatus is less than 5 m above the GSSP.
The last occurrence of Scaliognathus anchoralis europensis is about 30 m below the GSSP.
