GSSP for Lutetian Stage
Definition:
The base of the Lutetian Stage is located at 167.85m in the Gorrondatxe sea-cliff section, Basque Country, northern Spain. The GSSP is defined in a dark marly level and coincides with the first appearance of calcareous nannofossil Blackites inflatus.
Sedimentology:The base of the Lutetian Stage lies in a sequence of alternating pelagic limestones and marls, with turbidites commonly being just a few millimeters thick. The GSSP is defined in a dark marly level, 2.15 m below a prominent 15 cm thick turbidite at meter 170. |
Primary Markers:
The first appearance of calcareous nannofossil Blackites inflatus.Secondary Markers:
Calcareous nannofossils:The first occurrence of Nannotetrina cristata is 115 kyr younger than the GSSP level.
Paleomagnetics:
The C22/C21r magnetic reversal is 39 precession-related mudstone-marl couplets below the GSSP.
Correlation Events:
Calcareous nannofossil FAD of Blackites inflatusNotes on Derivation of Age:
