GSSP for Campanian Stage

Definition:

The base of the Campanian Stage is defined at level 221.53 m in the Bottaccione Gorge Section at Gubbio, Umbria-Marche Basin, Italy. It coincides with the magnetic polarity reversal from Chron C34n (top of the Long Cretaceous Normal Polarity-Chron) to Chron C33r.

Location:

The Bottaccione Gorge Section for the Campanian GSSP is located 1.4 km NNE of Gubbio, Umbria-Marche Basin, Italy. The GSSP section is located at a latitude of 43.36267° N and a longitude of 12.58283° E. The boundary interval extends from 210.79 - 233.63 m.

Sedimentology:

The GSSP section is 22.84 m thick and consists of well-bedded pink to red and white bioturbated limestones ranging from 6 - 80 cm. Pink to reddish and grey to greenish-grey chert nodules and limestone beds (3 - 6cm thick) occur throughout.

Primary Markers:

The base of the Campanian Stage coincides with the base of magnetic polarity Chron C33r.

Secondary Markers:

The base of magnetic polarity Chron C33r lies between the FO of calcareous nannofossil Aspidolithus parcus parcus at the 220.50 m level and the LO of planktonic foraminifer Dicarinella asymetrica.
