GSSP for Carnian Stage

Definition:

The base of the Carnian Stage is located at the base of bed SW4, about 45 cm above the base of the San Cassiano Formation in the Prati di Stuores/Stuores Wiesen section, at about 4.7 km south of San Cassiano, northern Italy. The GSSP is defined in a dark marly limestone, immediately underlying a sandstone bed. The base of the Lutetian Stage coincides with the first occurrence of ammonoid Daxatina canadensis.

Location:

The GSSP is located in the Dolomites, 4.7 km south of San Cassiano, northern Italy at a latitude of 46°31'37"N and a longitude of 11°55'49"E. The section is located on the left side of the Cordevole Valley, on the southern slope of the crest separating the Badia/Abtei and the Cordevole Valleys.
GSSP for Carnian Stage

Sedimentology:

The Prati di Stuores/Stuores Wiesen section is characterized by a 180 m thick interval of hemipelagic beds of the Wengen and Cassiano Formations. The GSSP lies at the base of Bed SW4, 45 m above the base of the Cassiano Formation. Bed SW4 consists of marly limestone, directly underlying a sandstone bed.

Primary Markers:

The first occurrence of ammonoid Daxatina canadensis.

Secondary Markers:

Conodonts:
The first occurrence of "Paragondolella" polygnathiformis noah is practically coincident with the FAD of Daxatina canadensis, and therefore allows global correlations.

Correlation Events:

FAD ammonoid Daxatina canadensis, near conodont FAD "Paragondolella" polygnathiformis noah. Just above magnetic polarity zone S2n and above the maximum flooding surface of Sequence Lad 3 of Hardenbol et al (1998).

Other Locations around the World:

The genus Daxatina is recognized in other sections of the Southern Alps, British Columbia, Svalbard Archipelago, Alaska, Himalayas region and Nevada.

Notes on Derivation of Age:

Magnetostratigraphic correlation to cycle-scaled Newark magnetic polarity pattern. However, revised correlations suggest 236.8 Ma
